Connie White (née Fozzard), a Cornwall resident who had an illustrious career as a consultant and Registrar at the Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust, left a legacy of over £2 million in her will to the University of Exeter to fund bursaries for medical students, who are from the region and from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Supported by the Connie Fozzard Scholarship, Ollie Battye reflects on his first year studying medicine at the University of Exeter.
A year of growth and gratitude: My first year studying medicine at Exeter
‘This year has been an eventful journey, filled with both challenges and exciting new opportunities, just as I had hoped for my first year of studying medicine at Exeter. As I reflect on the past year, I’m proud of the milestones I’ve achieved, each contributing to my academic and personal growth as I work toward becoming a doctor.
I successfully passed all areas of my study, with particular success in Special Study Units (SSUs) which focused on genetics and digital interventions for asthma. One of the key areas where I experienced significant growth was in preparing for my Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs). Learning to manage my nerves and practice in exam-like conditions helped me develop confidence and composure. These lessons have reinforced my commitment to succeeding in my future medical career.
Outside of academics, I immersed myself in university life by actively participating in societies like the Medical and Adventure Society, which offered a mix of curricular and extracurricular activities that I thoroughly enjoyed. While balancing academic responsibilities, building friendships, and adapting to remote learning was challenging at times, these experiences taught me valuable lessons in adaptability, time management, and perseverance.
I am deeply thankful for the support provided by the Connie Fozzard Scholarship, which has been instrumental in my educational journey. The scholarship has given me the financial freedom to focus on my studies without the stress of excessive student debt. It allowed me to fully engage in my coursework and extracurricular activities without the need for a part-time job. The scholarship also enabled me to purchase essential medical equipment, such as a stethoscope and a sphygmomanometer, which were crucial for my practical training and OSCE preparation. Additionally, it gave me the financial confidence to begin driving lessons, which will be essential for my future placements.
The Connie Fozzard Scholarship has empowered me to complete my first year of medicine to a standard I’m proud of and provided me with the independence to explore my options at this critical stage in my career development. I am incredibly grateful for this support and excited for what the future holds.’
