Understanding and preventing miscarriages of justice
Throughout the year, we host various events for alumni. Whether it’s drinks in your area, sporting occasions, webinars, or updates from industry leaders and your University, there are many ways to keep connected and get involved with the worldwide Exeter community. Take a look at some of the events we hosted last year.
Law 100 Dinners
In 2023, we celebrated the centenary of the University of Exeter Law School and we were delighted to host a number of events to mark this milestone anniversary. In April, we hosted a gala dinner at Vintners’ Hall, London, and it was a pleasure to have so many alumni attend.
In November, we hosted the Centre for European Legal Studies Lasok Lecture and we were delighted to welcome Paul Lasok (Exeter alumnus and son of Dominic Lasok) onto campus to introduce the lecture for alumni in person and online.
Also in November, we held a ball at Rockbeare Manor, nr Exeter, and were thrilled to present Steve Edge with an award for ‘Outstanding Contribution to Exeter Law School’ during the evening. It was a celebration of the past 100 years as we were joined by past and present lecturers, as well as many alumni from across the decades and some of our current Law students.
We are incredibly proud of all that’s been achieved over the last 100 years, and we look forward to seeing where the next 100 years takes us. It’s your support that makes Exeter the kind of place that creates a positive difference to peoples’ lives.
Annual Alumni Golf Day
In September, we hosted the 17th Annual Alumni Golf Day at Worplesdon Golf Club and it was wonderful to see so many new faces join us this year as we welcomed 20 first time golfers. All proceeds from the event go towards supporting the student golf club at the University, which includes funding golf scholarships, new equipment, and travel for tournaments and competitions.
We were delighted that the event raised more than £9,000 on the day via the auction and 17 prizes were generously donated to the auction by alumni. Huge congratulations to the winners, Ben Brenton (English and French, 2016), Henri Cooke (Mathematics with Economics, 2015), Jamie Sones (Economics and Finance, 2015) and James Wallace (Economics, 2013) (pictured).
Penryn Garden Party
Hosted by the President and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Lisa Roberts, the Cornwall Garden Party gives us the opportunity to welcome valued friends, partners and alumni to the Penryn Campus, to thank them for the support and time they have given to the University over the past year, and to celebrate our successes together.
More than 100 guests and colleagues gathered on Tremough Lawn for drinks and a buffet reception and enjoyed informal networking and mingling in June. It is now an annual summertime event in the Cornwall calendar!
International events
In June, more than 400 alumni and offer-holders attended Vice-Chancellor receptions in Hong-Kong, Shanghai, and Beijing. Further welcome events in these countries took place in November, with nearly 200 alumni in attendance.
In July, Professor Martin Siegert hosted an Alumni Reception in Kuala Lumpur, welcoming alumni across Malaysia to share their fond Exeter memories. Similarly, Professor Tim Quine hosted Alumni Receptions in Japan and Singapore in December, which were a wonderful opportunity for alumni to reconnect.
For New York City Climate Week in September, we brought together alumni at a reception to hear from Professor Gail Whiteman, a world-leading expert on global risk arising from the systemic changes occurring in the natural environment. Professor Whiteman shared with us her latest research on climate tipping points and highlighted what alumni can do to support climate change initiatives.
In November, the Vice-Chancellor welcomed our largest ever crowd of alumni and supporters in Madrid. We were honoured to welcome alumna Her Highness Infanta Elena (Sociology and Education, 1990), who spoke and shared fond Exeter memories. Our Vice-Chancellor also visited Paris, where we thanked our long-serving volunteers of our France Alumni Network and shared the exciting news of a new agreement to deliver a series of joint PhD degree projects with the Université Paris-Saclay.
In late-November, more than 100 alumni attended an Alumni Christmas Reunion in Bangkok. The event welcomed alumni across Thailand to meet and network with a jam-packed evening including dinner, a DJ set, and even Secret Santa!
Alastair Banks webinar
In September, we were delighted to host a webinar about building your personal brand with Exeter alum, Alastair Banks (Computer Science, 2000). The webinar was a great opportunity for people to think about how we present ourselves online and how we can build on our own personal brand.
Alastair used some fantastic examples and talked about how he has grown his company, Optix Solutions, over the last 20 years.
