Understanding and preventing miscarriages of justice
Alumni Matters
We’re excited to have launched our new series of video chats with our alumni – Alumni Matters!
The video interviews are a series of conversations with several alumni to learn more about their careers, their thoughts on some of the key challenges our world is facing, and to discover how they are helping to shape it into a greener, healthier, and fairer place.
For our first video we were joined by alumnus Dr Tanimola Martins (PhD in Primary care diagnosis of cancer and ethnic inequality, 2014) who currently works as a Research Fellow and Lecturer in Postgraduate Education at our Medical School. Tani spoke about racial differences in cancer diagnosis, reasons why these can exist, the importance of further research in this area and suggestions on how we can conquer cancer.
Our second interview was with Daniel Crockett (Geography, 2002) who is the Director of Ocean and Climate at the Blue Marine Foundation. We spoke about COP28 and the place of oceans in the discussion, the growing need to consider our impact on the planet, as well as the work the foundation is doing alongside local communities to preserve our blue planet.
Fiona Coughlan (English with French, 2005) who works as Head of Climate Diplomacy at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office was our most recent guest. We chatted about how alumni can make 2024 count in terms of greener decisions and her previous work on the Climate Action for a Resilient Asia (CARA) programme.
Keep an eye out for more video interviews coming soon:
Alumni Volunteer Awards
Every year, thousands of alumni volunteers support the staff, students, and alumni of the University of Exeter. Our volunteers help us to enhance the student experience and improve career prospects, bring their industry expertise and insights to the curriculum, support the alumni community, and provide valuable strategic advice to University staff.
Each year we recognise their amazing support through our Alumni Volunteer Awards, which celebrate all of our fantastic volunteers and say thank you to those exceptional individuals who do so much to support the University. The awards started six years ago, and each year we call upon on our community to nominate alumni who deserve recognition for going the extra mile. These can be individuals who have provided exceptional support to the alumni community, and those who have given their time and expertise to support students.
We are always looking for alumni to get involved, either by volunteering themselves or nominating someone who has provided exceptional service.

Black History Month
In October, we celebrated Black History Month and the theme for 2023 was ‘Celebrating our Sisters / Saluting our Sisters / Matriarchs of Movements’ with a focus on the female experience of Black history.
Throughout October we shared a series of alumnae profiles on our social media channels – including recent Honorary Graduate Melanie Eusebe MBE and former Chancellor Baroness Floella Benjamin – as well as news and resources for our alumni to access.
Thank you to the alumnae that took part and submitted a profile: Andrea Hounto (History and Politics, 2016), Basirat Razaq-Shuaib (Finance and Investment, 2009), Nasara Al-Hassan (Medical Sciences with Professional Training, 2021) and Tinashe Verhaeghe (Accounting and Finance, 2011). You can take a look at the profiles on our website:
In 2023, a new scholarship programme that supports Black British PhD students was established by founding donors Sarah Turvill, the University’s former Chair of Council; environmental philanthropist Roger De Freitas; and private equity fund manager Wol Kolade CBE. We are delighted to have now welcomed the first three recipients of this programme. Find an update on their progress here:
